3Shape Smile Design turns your patient’s photo into a photorealistic 2D mock-up of the new smile. Carrying that design into the mouth takes more steps. It takes a 3D mock-up the patient can try, a crown lengthening guide where the gingiva has to move, and restorations that match what they agreed to.
A wax-up the patient dislikes goes back to the lab to be waxed up again. Go in blind on crown lengthening, and a case that needed no restorations can end with exposed root surface and veneer preps nobody planned.
By the end of this course you should be able to plan a smile from the patient’s photos and tooth proportions, and see how Doug turns it into a 3D mock-up. You will see how to use the mock-up to guide crown lengthening, and how to transfer it to the mouth with direct and indirect restorations.
When he recorded this, Dr. Doug Watt was one of the partners in a dental practice in Leamington, UK. The practice worked with CEREC machines and a TRIOS, printed in-house on a Rapid Shape printer and milled chairside crowns on a Roland mill, with designs from both TRIOS Design Studio and Dental System.
He recorded this in 2020. All the information and processes are still clinically relevant; just the products and software are from then.
One 3Shape UK webinar in seven lessons, 49 minutes in all, with a ten-question quiz at the end.
Doug starts with the principles of smile design and the Smile Design software. Crown lengthening guided by a digital mock-up comes next, with and without a CBCT scan, then the ways he transfers a mock-up to the mouth. The last two lessons cover tooth libraries and the attendees’ questions, which Doug answers with the host, Charlie, a 3Shape UK product specialist.
What you will learn
- The tooth proportions, contact points and embrasures a smile design starts from
- Taking the photos and building a smile frame in 3Shape Smile Design, including the FAB smile frames
- Using one known measurement, with your surgical plan, to weigh how much to crown lengthen and how much to add to the incisal edge
- How Doug builds a 3D mock-up in Dental System, aligned to the smile frame with the RealView engine, and why it replaced his wax-ups
- A crown lengthening guide made from the mock-up
- Reading enamel and bone on a CBCT scan before crown lengthening a case with no restorations, and the guide offset he settled on
- Transferring the mock-up with composite veneers and injection molding, and other options he names, such as silicone matrices, smile trials and printed temporaries
- Tooth libraries, and reusing a patient’s own teeth in a new design
- Whether TRIOS Design Studio can make mock-ups, milling on an open mill, and his choice of 3D printer
Complete every lesson and pass the quiz for your certificate, 1.5 hours of CE/CPD. The Institute of Digital Dentistry is an AGD PACE approved provider, Provider ID 403044.
You get lifetime access to the course as recorded.
Written for dentists who own a 3Shape TRIOS and want to take Smile Design beyond the photo, into crown lengthening and esthetic restorative work.
In Doug’s workflow, the 3D mock-ups and guides are designed in Dental System, 3Shape’s lab software. When he recorded this, TRIOS Design Studio could not make the mock-ups. Without Dental System, a lab was probably better placed to build them from your smile design.
This is one recorded webinar, so it shows Doug’s workflow and cases rather than teaching the software or the surgery step by step. It does not teach intraoral scanning.
